Defenders of Liberty Sale: From Sullivan's Island to Independence

On June 28, 1776, thunder erupted across Charleston Harbor as British and American forces clashed in a pivotal battle at Sullivan’s Island that would also introduce an important player in the Revolution. Following a decisive defeat in North Carolina four months earlier, the assault was the latest attempt by British forces to make inroads in the southern colonies from which they could stamp out the growing Patriot rebellion.
That morning, a fleet of nine Royal Navy warships unleashed a relentless bombardment upon Fort Sullivan. Though hastily constructed, its sand-packed palmetto log walls held firm, absorbing enemy fire and allowing infantry and artillery to return volley with deliberate and deadly precision. Amid the smoke and chaos, several British ships ran aground while others collided in the confusion of battle. As darkness fell, the guns too fell silent. Having sustained extensive damage and casualties, the surprised and battered British fleet withdrew in defeat, failing to take the fort or the port.
A shot across the bow of the British Royal Navy, the Patriot victory at Sullivan’s Island only deepened American resolve in the fight for independence. The battle also sparked the rise of newly promoted Major Francis Marion, whose role in organizing the fort’s construction and leading its successful defense revealed his composed leadership and tactical discipline. Though still early in his military career, Marion’s performance offered a glimpse of the tenacity that would define his contributions throughout the American Revolution and beyond.
