Blind, bleeding, and alone in the cockpit of a crippled UH-34D, he talked his inexperienced co-pilot through the crisis, followed turn-by-turn radio calls from his wingman, and landed every one of his wounded Marines on the deck of the USS Repose. For that, the men of HMM-362 gave him a name he carried for the rest of his life: The One-Eyed Ugly Angel.
